One of my favorite, go-to patterns, is Polar Opposites by Plucky Knitter Design. It’s a free pattern and uses two very different weights of yarn, hence the name.
Although the pattern calls for a bulky weight and a lace weight yarn, I used Aran weight and lace weight for my version of this easy, yet very cool-looking cowl.
The Aran weight yarn I used for this project is Julie Spins MCN 180 Aran in colorway Jack in the Pulpit:
This yarn is made of 80% Merino, 10% Nylon, 10% Cashmere. Julie Spins sells her yarn in her Etsy shop.
The lace weight yarn I used is the lovely Malabrigo Yarn Silkpaca in colorway Lettuce:
Malabrigo Silkpaca is made of 70% Alpaca, 30% Silk.
The pattern is knit flat and utilizes the crochet provisional cast-on and the kitchener bind-off techniques. Both very helpful techniques that every knitter should know how to do.
This cowl looks great, is warm, yet light, and is a quick knit. Makes for great car, tv or knit night knitting. Just knit and purl!
Love this! I’m a fan of using contrasting weight yarns in my knits and designs. Looks my queue just got longer again 🙂

That is a really classy looking cowl! The colors go brilliantly together. I have to admit, I’ve been looking at bulkier yarns even though I don’t knit with them much. Something like this would be lovely to have.
